Multiple ExposuresAssignment: Create a photograph that tells a story or shows an emotion by combining two or more photographs.
* One photo should be a NEW PHOTO specific for this assignment. *If needed ONE photo can be a stock image from the internet.
To Begin: It is highly recommended that you use a face as one of your images. Think about what you’d like this face to be saying. Extreme emotions are sometimes easier than subtle ones. Give direction to your model so that they can emote the exact feeling that you’d like to convey. Select an image to be overlain on the face. Patterns, textures, geometrical and natural elements work well. It would be best if it’s one of your own images, however it may be one you got from a creative commons search.
Low Key Approach: Low key lighting means a very dark style of lighting. Often only one light is used. This approach works well with somber, angry or intense expressions.
Take a low key portrait. Open your portrait and your other photo in Photoshop. Set the blending mode of the top image to Multiply. Adjust the opacity to whatever looks best to you
High Key Approach: High key lighting means a very bright style of lighting. Usually multiple lights are used some on the model and some on the backdrop to keep it bright. This approach works well with energetic and upbeat expressions. Take a high key portrait. Open your portrait and your other photo in Photoshop. Set the blending mode of the top image to Lighten or Multiply. Adjust the opacity to whatever looks best to you
Feel free to experiment with blending modes, more than one overlain image, opacity, dodging, burning, curves, levels, color balance, black & white, selective color, or anything else you feel helps your image.
